The Traveling Picture Show Company and GiGi Films have cast Tom Pelphrey as con man Jason Derek Brown in “American Murderer,” alongside Ryan Phillippe playing the FBI agent tasked to hunt him down.
Idina Menzel and Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver have also been cast. AFI alumnus Matthew Gentile wrote the script and will direct, with principal photography commencing in Salt Lake City. Kevin Matusow and Carissa Buffel will produce for TPSC alongside Gia Walsh and Kara Baker under the GiGi Films banner, in line with Utah state and SAG-AFTRA COVID-19 protocols.
“American Murderer” is based on the true story of Brown – a charismatic conman who bankrolls his luxurious lifestyle through a series of scams. When his funds run low and his past catches up with him, he plots his most elaborate scheme yet and, in the process, becomes the FBI’s most unlikely top ten fugitive. Pelphrey, recently named one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch for 2020, can currently be seen in David Fincher’s “Mank,” playing Joseph Mankiewicz.
“If you don’t give them what they want, you know what’s going to happen…” The Jokers from France has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Sons of Philadelphia, though it also goes under a few other titles including Brothers by Blood or The Sound of Philadelphia (this will apparently be the US release title). Adapted from the book “Brotherly Love” by Pete Dexter, the film is a tale of family, friendships and betrayal in the violent world of the Philadelphia mob. Focusing on two brothers, one adopted, who grew into different people. The cast is the most exciting part: Matthias Schoenaerts, Joel Kinnaman, Maika Monroe, Ryan Phillippe, and Paul Schneider. This looks extra dark and depressing. Made by a French filmmaker, so it’s opening in France first at the end of December, then will arrive in the US sometime early 2021. This trailer is still in English as the film takes place in Philadelphia.

Sons of Philadelphia, also known as Brothers by Blood and/or The Sound of Philadelphia, is directed by French writer / filmmaker Jérémie Guez, director of the film A Bluebird in My Heart previously, as well as the writer on many other scripts. The screenplay is also written by Jérémie Guez, adapted form Pete Dexter’s novel “Brotherly Love”. This recently premiered at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, and will open in France this month. The Sound of Philadelphia is currently set to open in the US in theaters starting on January 22nd, 2021 next year.
Move over, The Impossible. There’s a new movie making its way to the top of Netflix’s charts. And it even stars one of our favorite actors, Ryan Phillippe.
Called ‘The 2nd’ (referencing the second amendment of the United States Constitution), the 2020 film just made its way to the number two spot on the streaming service’s list of most-watched movies, surpassing The Impossible, Easy A, Operation Christmas Drop, Mile 22, Knock Knock and Holidate. ‘The 2nd’ follows secret-service agent, Vic Davis, on his way to pick up his estranged son, Sean, from his college campus when he finds himself in the middle of a high-stakes terrorist operation. Yikes. His son’s friend Erin Walton (the daughter of a Supreme Court Justice) is the target, and this armed gang will stop at nothing to kidnap her and use her as leverage for a pending landmark legal case.
And while some reviews (we’re looking at you Rotten Tomatoes) were less than kind to the small-budget film, we were actually fairly impressed (and entertained). In fact, The 2nd feels like a true throwback to old-school action movies featuring never-ending fight scenes and explosions. Not to mention, watching Phillippe show off his fighting skills is an added plus.
In addition to Phillippe, the action-thriller also stars Casper Van Dien (All American), Jack Griffo (Knight Squad), Lexi Simonsen (The Pyramid), Richard Burgi (General Hospital) and William Katt (The Unwanted). The film was directed by Brian Skiba, and produced by Phillippe, Geoffrey James Clark, Kirk Shaw, Daniel Grodnik, James Shavick and Josh Tessier.
So, maybe take a break from all of the Christmas movie bingeing and opt for something a little more action-packed this evening.
It was a busy Tuesday night at CBS, which saw a trio of coronavirus-delayed season premieres kicking off with the Season 18 debut of NCIS, which delivered 0.9 in the adults 18-49 demographic and 10.06 million viewers. The popular procedural topped the night in viewership but was down from its Season 17 average, marking a series low in the demo per Nielsen’s Live+Same Day early numbers.
The third season debut of FBI (0.8, 8.05M) and the Season 2 kickoff of FBI Most Wanted (0.6, 5.30M) followed, but both series took a hit from last season’s averages and hit audience lows. Still, CBS won the night overall in total viewers.
The Bachelorette (1.3, 4.94M) on ABC dipped two tenths from last week but was still enough to be the night’s top-rated show. That led into David E. Kelley’s Twin Peaks-adjacent Pacific Northwest noir thriller Big Sky (Rating: 0.6, Audience: 4.03M) made its big debut (with an even bigger twist). The duo helped ABC take the night’s No. 1 spot overall in the demo.
On NBC, The Voice (1.1, 7.35M) was up from Monday night’s episode and on par with last week. The latest tear-jerking episode of This Is Us (1.1, 7.35M) was down a tenth in the demo, as was the medical drama Transplant (0.4, 3.45M).
All was steady on the Fox front with Cosmos (0.3, 1.40M) and NeXt (0.2, 1.00M), while the CW had little movement in its numbers with Swamp Thing (0.1, 673,000) and Tell Me a Story (0.1, 406K).
